The handpan, also known as the hang drum, was inspired by the famous Hang instrument. The Hang was invented by Swiss couple Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer in 2001. Since that time, many people have been inspired by the Hang's design. Handpans started popping up everywhere, with many variations in shape, texture, colour, and design.
A traditional handpan is made of two dome-shaped sheets of nitrided steel stuck together. This creates a hollowed out convex shape, the surface of which the maker can manipulate to create any combination of notes in any scale. The centre note on top of the instrument is known as a "Ding" which is surrounded by the remaining notes of the scale. The underside of the instrument has a large hole known as a "Gu" and this is what allows the sound to resonate loudly.
